About Us
Who we are
We are a niche consultant group that has focused solely on indoor swimming pools worldwide since 2012. We specialize in both air and water quality for swimming pools. Our team has subject-matter experts in natatorium use, operations (both water and air), maintenance, construction, and design.
We evaluate existing natatoriums that have air quality issues and help mechanical engineers, facility owners and installing contractors make the proper corrections. We also know what to strive for (and avoid) when designing new natatoriums. We offer design assistance to help mechanical engineers and architects with the fundamentals of natatorium design, and we coordinate with aquatic design consultants too. We help ensure the HVAC system matches the pool, and that the chloramine pollution can be controlled in a permanent, efficient way.
Who we are not
We are not professional engineers, nor do we compete with them. We only assist design professionals in getting things done right, because indoor swimming pools and pump rooms are all we work on. We are not project managers or leaders of the design team.
Why we exist
Breathing problems can ruin a natatorium's reputation. We have personally experienced just how miserable indoor pools can be. Chloramine problems are not rare, either. We have been to swim meets where an Ambulance is idling in the parking lot, just waiting for a swimmer who might need it. It is unacceptable.
Too many swimmers have been getting sick, and continue to get sick. And too many facilities are pressured not only to deal with the health concerns, but financially forced to deal with the corrosive damage of airborne chloramines.
We exist to eradicate airborne chloramine problems, permanently. We will not be satisfied until the new standard of care is adequate enough to stop these problems for good. If you have an indoor swimming pool with air quality challenges, you are not alone. Perhaps we can help.
Our story
Chloramine Consulting was founded by Eric Knight, a former American Record holder in swimming, who developed sport-induced asthma and lung scarring from swimming indoors.
At the time, doctors told him "you're allergic to chlorine." That was not the case (especially now that we know our own white blood cells produce chlorine (HOCl) to fight off germs as part of our immune system). No, Eric was just like millions of other people who swim indoors each year that inhale airborne chloramines.
Eric was hired directly off the pool deck (literally) after swimming in the 2012 US Olympic Trials. The journey to fix indoor air quality had begun months before, when the Paddock Evacuator® was installed in the pool Eric and his team (SwimMAC Team Elite) trained in every day. The system made such an impact, it allowed Eric and some of his teammates to leave their albuterol inhalers in their bags, instead of needing them on the edge of the pool for regular use.
Fast forward to 2016. Eric was hired by Orenda Technologies, where he began to learn about water chemistry. He developed the Orenda App and its industry-leading Orenda Calculator®, created and hosted The Rule Your Pool® Podcast, and became one of the most prolific pool chemistry instructors in the United States.
Eric's mission is simple: eradicate chloramine problems globally through education, facility evaluations and design assistance for architects and engineers. Bad indoor air quality is a preventable problem! But nobody knows what they don't know. Chloramine Consulting exists to change that. Every natatorium should be built with air quality top of mind; not as an afterthought.
Eric currently serves as the Executive Director of Watershape University, the leading accredited higher-education institution in the pool and spa industry. Through Watershape University, Eric and his team offer IACET-Accredited air design webinars and in-person trainings for Engineers and Architects to earn Continuing Education Units (CEU's). Does an indoor pool you care about struggle with corrosion issues, bad air quality, and swimmers coughing? Are you concerned for the health and wellbeing of lifeguards, swimmers and coaches? If so, don't wait...chloramine problems don't solve themselves. A facility evaluation might be your first step toward solving the issue.
